Name given to an approximate quarter of the Milky Way Galaxy, roughly 50,000 light-years across, in which most member planets of the Federation are found. The Bajoran Wormhole provided a shortcut from the Alpha Quadrant to the Gamma Quadrant.

BRIG - noun. Detention area on a starship used to detain individuals suspected of a crime or who are believed to pose a security risk to the crew or ship. A prisoner in the brig is kept in his cell with the use of a forcefield.
